Whenever I go to my local restaurant in Jugenheim that specialises in game (venison, pheasants, hare, wild boar, bear) I eat 12 snails and drink a bottle of Alde Gott Spätburgunder. We were there yesterday for Sunday lunch time and had a wonderful meal and drank two bottles between three of us. This is one of the better red wines in Germany. The vineyard is at Sasbachwalden which is down south near Achern just across the Rhine from Strasbourg. I also came across it in the Cathay Pacific lounge at Frankfurt airport!
And joy! The 2007 Heppenheimer Herrenwingert is now available. Very early but very welcome.

- Garnet’s the name, born and bred in Surrey, U.K. In the late 1960’s I was lucky enough to be sent on a 6-month contract to Germany. Hands up who saw the Germany thing in Briget Jones’ diary – that was me, I had to look on the map to find it. But, to cut a long story short I have been living in Germany ever since. Well, let me put that another way, I have been living in a Wine Growing Region. I have observed a huge difference in behaviour between regions where the grape is king or the hop rules (not to mention the malt). Germany is an excellent place to observe this. Visit the villages in Bavaria or on the Mosel and compare the atmosphere of a Bierfest with a Weinfest – different planets. I divide Europe not by nations but by regions that either Grow Grapes or they don’t. The regions we will explore together are what I call, roughly, the German speaking areas – Alsace, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italian Tirol. OK, that’s enough – I have set out my stall and I will be filling it with regular posts. Comments are always very welcome.

Blauer Portugieser: Grwon in Rheinhessen, Pfalz, Bergstrasse and wine regions of Lower Austria around the towns of Alberndorf im Pulkautal, Retz and Thermenregion. It is Austria's third most planted red grape variety after Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch. In Germany it is used to make every day table wine and Weissherbst (rosé). In the Ahr, it is often blended with Spätburgunder.
Blaufränkisch (lit. blue Frankish), Lemberger, or Blauer Limberger: The grape is grown across Central Europe, including Czech Republic (Moravia region), Slovakia (where it is known as "Frankovka"), Slovenia (where it is known as "modra frankinja"), Austria and Germany. It is used to produce dry, red wines which are typically rich in tannin and may exhibit a pronounced spicy, masculine character.
Dornfelder: It was bred in Weinsberg, Württemberg in 1955 in order to give German vintners a dark red grape that would grow well in German vineyards. Traditionally, because of a climate that is cooler and less sunny than France or Italy, German wines had been primarily white. The reds of Germany were usually pale and light-bodied. Dornfelder, however, is a German wine that is full-bodied with plenty of tannin, and has become the third most grown varietal in Germany. It is also grown in England.
It is quite unusual for a red wine because it is rather sweet. However, with its robust plum flavours, Dornfelder is better suited to spicy, heavy foods than to desserts.
Frühburgunder: A smaller-berried, lower yield variety of Spätburgunder which is grown in Rheinhessen, Bergstrasse and Ahr area and can produce very good wines.
Schwarzriesling, better known as Pinot meunier, Müllerrebe, and Miller's Burgundy: In Germany used to make an inexpensive off-dry (halbtrocken) red wine.
It is a variety of black wine grape most frequently used in the production of Champagne. It was first mentioned in the 1500's, and gets its name (meunier - meaning miller) from flour-like dusty white down on the underside of its leaves.
